Overview
Framed by a focus on the experiences and politics of migration in the Mediterranean, this unique offering brings together colleagues from Geography, Cultural Studies, History, Law, Psychology, Public Health and Policy. It will engage students in interdisciplinary historical, legal, labour, health and rights frameworks, as well as in policies, ideologies, practices and experiences that relate to cross-border migration, both documented and undocumented. Topics covered will range from histories of migration to labour pathways and economic migration, questions of migrant crises, displacement and its effects on youth, health, and climate, environmental change and food systems.
Course Aims
Teaching and Learning
With experts from multiple disciplinary backgrounds at hand, it is our intention to open spaces for transdisciplinary approaches to understanding international migration in its complexities. We will collaborate with Maltese academics and migration activists, and where possible, there will be the opportunity to learn from migrants and refugees on the island.
Combining lively discussions, talks, ethnographic walks, cultural explorations, guest speakers, in-class activities, selected students will have the opportunity to visit Gozo and Malta’s many sites of relevant interest.
Entry Requirements
The 2025 edition is open to Postgraduate and Doctoral Students, Professionals and Practitioners in Migration-related Studies and is open by invitation only. Selected students will be expected to demonstrate ongoing academic interest in and knowledge of international migration through their current or recent programme of study. The Migration School will be held in English.
VISA Requirements
EU students do not need a visa to study at Queen Mary Malta. From 2 April 2025, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) comes into effect in the EU and applicants from the UK will require a short term VISA to enter Malta.
International students (depending on nationality) do require a visa to study at Queen Mary Malta. Students who are unsure on whether they require a visa should contact the Business Development Team for further information before applying for their visa.
