Professor Jonathan Grigg is the leading UK paediatrician in the effects of air pollution. His research has identified the mechanisms whereby inhalation of particles increases vulnerability to bacterial infection. These studies have informed the public on the risks of air pollution, and influenced national policy. He was a lead author of the Royal College of Physicians’ Report on the long-term effects of air pollution (https://www.rcplondon.ac.uk/projects/outputs/every-breath-we-take-lifelong-impact-air-pollution ). In the area of paediatric respiratory medicine, he has led major independent and industry trials of new and existing asthma therapies.

Jo Etienne Abela was born in Gozo on 29 November, 1975. He lives in Sliema, married and has three children. Attended Sir Arturo Mercieca Primary School in Victoria, Ninu Cremona – Junior Lyceum Complex and sixth form Sir Michelangelo Refalo, all in Gozo. He studied medicine and surgery at the University of Malta between 1993 and 1999 where he later worked as a medical doctor at St Luke’s Hospital. He moved to Scotland in 2003 to further his studies. During his stay in Glasgow he became a Consultant of surgery where he was the youngest surgeon in the whole country. He then specialized on the esophagus and  the pancreas. He returned to Malta in 2012 and a year later began working at Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo Hospital and also as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta. Professor Jo Etienne Abela has held administrative positions as Deputy Head of the Department of Surgery and Lead Clinician in the High Dependency Unit, endoscopy and pancreatic disease. He also serves as an IST at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh and is a college and a Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS) examiner in surgery.  He contested the General Election of March 2022 on the 10th and 13th electoral districts and after being elected, was appointed Minister for Active Ageing in the Government led by Prime Minister Robert Abela. In 2024 he was appointed Minister for Health and Active Ageing.

Professor Alex Torpiano is Dean of the Faculty for the Built Environment of the University of Malta, a position he has held for the last 16 years; he has served as Head of the Department of Building and Civil Engineering, 1988-1999, 2007-2011, as Head of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering, 2011-2016, as Head of the Department of Architecture and Urban Design, 2016-2020, and Acting Head of the Department of Visual Arts, 2021-2022. Het set up and served as Director of the Institute for Masonry and Construction Research between 1994 – 2009. He is currently member of the University Senate, (since 2008), and has served as a member of the Council of University between 2009-2021. He is a member of the Board of the Institute of Sustainable Energy, and of the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development. He has served as President of the Chamber of Architects and Civil Engineers, 1994-1996, 2017-2019, as Chairman of the Valletta Rehabilitation Committee 1995-1996, 2000-2001, as member of the Periti Warranting Board between 1999-2001 and since 2009. He has also served on the Eurocodes National Implementation Committee since 2002. Until March 2024, he was Executive President of the National Trust of Malta, Din l-Art Helwa.

Minister Clint Camilleri, an architect by profession, was first appointed Minister for Gozo in 2020 and reconfirmed in his position  after the March 2022 General Election. In 2924 he was appointed Minister for Gozo and Planning. Clint Camilleri studied at the Universities of Malta and Kentucky, United States and successfully graduated as Architect and Civil Engineer.

Hailing from a family well involved in politics, following in the footsteps of both his grandfather and late father, Architect Camilleri was first elected Mayor of his hometown, Qala, in 2012.

In 2017 he successfully contested the General Election and was elected as member of Parliament from the 13th electoral district. He was appointed as Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights.

Clint Camilleri is married to Dr Deborah Camilleri and he is the father of two daughters.

Dr Mark Scerri is a full-time senior lecturer with the Division of Environmental Management and Planning of the Institute of Earth Systems. Mark is in possession of a Bachelors degree in Chemistry and Physics a Masters degree in Chemistry (both from the University of Malta), a Masters degree in Environmental Management and Technology from the De Montfort University (UK), Aalborg Universitet Esbjerg (Denmark) and the Fachhochschule Emden/Leer (Germany) and a Doctorate in Applied Geosciences from the Technische Universität Darmstadt. Mark delivers lectures to undergraduate students on Waste Management, Environmental Law, Environmental Pollution, Environment Impact Assessment and Climate Change.

Mark has extensive professional experience in Environmental Regulation, particularly in the control of emissions from stationary sources and in ambient air quality. Mark is a full Member of the Institution of Environmental Sciences, the Institute of Air Quality Management, the European Environmental Law Forum, the German Association for Aerosol Research and the German Chemical Society. He has also acted as a reviewer for the international journals Atmospheric Research, Chemosphere, Environmental Research and Atmosphere.

Catherine Hurley is an energy and construction major projects expert and CEO, with a track record of delivering complex projects here in Malta and abroad. She has a special interest in smart sustainable buildings and was previously CEO at Quad Central, the first LEED platinum rated development in Malta. Prior to that, Catherine led the “LNG to Power ” project in    Malta which introduced natural gas as fuel for electrical generation for the first time to Malta, along with the latest CCGT technology. As a result, national emissions from power generation were cut by circa 53% and particulate matter by 90%. Catherine currently works as consultant and advisor on a number of energy projects, as well as strategic account director for AIS Malta, a design and build office interiors firm.

Juergen Attard is a Senior Manager Research and Policy Development at the Gozo Regional Development Authority. Before this role Mr Attard served as a Senior Economist at the Central Bank of Malta forming part of the Bank’s forecasting team. Mr Attard conducted research studies covering a spectrum of fiscal-related subjects, along with other broad range of topics. Mr Attard holds a first degree in economics from the University of Malta and a master’s degree in economics from the University of York.

Dr Russell’s expertise covers two closely related topics:

  1. Understanding present day and future climate change risks to human and natural systems; and
  2. The analysis and development of effective policies and responses to manage those climate change risks.

He has recently held a British Academy Innovation Fellowship examining changing flood risk and effective flood risk management strategies and is part of the team leading a 5-year, £2m Wellcome Trust project examining extreme heat and pre-term birth in Zimbabwe.

Immediately before joining QMUL, Dr Russell was a civil servant working on UK climate policy in the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), international climate science in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and international biodiversity evidence in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Prior to his civil service career Dr Russell was a Senior Lecturer at Brunel University London where he led an interdisciplinary research group focussing on climate change impacts and directed undergraduate and postgraduate degrees on environmental science and climate change. Dr Russell is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

Dr Suzanne Maas works as the Climate Campaign Coordinator at Friends of the Earth Malta, focusing on topics related to climate, energy and mobility. She also lectures part-time at the University of Malta. Suzanne has a Masters degree in Environmental Sciences and a PhD in Sustainable Mobility with the Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development at the University of Malta. Her research focused on the use of bicycle sharing systems and the promotion of cycling in a Southern European context. Having grown up in the Netherlands, she was pretty much born on a bicycle, and has been an active cyclist – and cycling activist – in Malta during the 10+ years she has been living and working here. Through her work and studies, she has understood how our urban environments shape our behaviours, including daily travel habits and physical activity, and strongly believes in the positive impact that living environments that include greenery, nature and safe spaces for active travel can have on healthy lifestyles and an improved quality of life.

Simone Inguanez joined Arts Council Malta in 2009. For the last 9 years, she has been responsible for strategy development and support relating to Diversity and Communities.

She leads the implementation of the Right to Culture sensitisation campaign, with a focus on facilitating meaningful engagement with culture and the arts and enabling creative well-being.

Simone’s interests lie at the crossroads between diverse narratives, creative expression, and human rights. She graduated in Law, and continued to pursue studies in human sciences, and language. She has served on the Maltese language council since its creation in 2005. She is a published author and award-winning translator.

Dr John Paul Cauchi is a PhD graduate from the Queensland University of Technology. He first graduated with a medical degree (MD) from the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta before specialising in Public Health by completing a MSc degree focusing on environmental health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is an experienced academic researcher. John Paul’s areas of interest include research on Climate Change, Food Security and Health outcomes. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Queen Mary University of London’s Malta Campus.
